Announcement for Munich Climate School 2025

The climate crisis is intensifying – and its effects are impossible to ignore. The growing frequency of extreme weather events, including the devastating European floods in 2021, highlights how deeply climate change is already affecting our world. At LMU Munich, we believe that responding to this global threat demands strong collaboration between science, civil society, and business. Climate change concerns almost all areas of academic research, and meaningful progress can only be achieved through interdisciplinary dialogue.

With this conviction, we are pleased to announce the Munich Climate School 2025, which will be taking place from 6 to 11 October. Launched in 2021, the Climate School is a one-week interdisciplinary program open to students from all disciplines and nationalities. Participation is possible both on-site in Munich and online via Zoom. The program is free of charge, and all participants will receive an official certificate upon successful completion.

The program features contributions from over 20 outstanding researchers across various disciplines at LMU who are actively working on the major challenges of our time. Through keynote lectures, interactive sessions, and practical modules, participants will gain a broad yet in-depth understanding of the many dimensions of climate change.

One of the highlights of the program is the COP simulation, in which students take on the roles of international diplomats and engage in realistic climate negotiations. This immersive format offers a hands-on perspective on the complexity of international climate policy and has become a key feature of the Climate School. Based on our belief that experience is the best teacher, this simulation provides invaluable insights into real-world challenges and dynamics.

In addition to academic content, the program includes excursions and experiments in nature and technology. These informal activities offer further opportunities for students to connect across disciplines and backgrounds, building a strong international network of engaged peers.

Feedback from former participants has been overwhelmingly positive. One student described it as “a real pleasure and privilege to learn from all the interdisciplinary experts and researchers.” This reflects the core mission of the Munich Climate School – to inspire, connect, and empower students in addressing the climate crisis.

In 2023, the Munich Climate School was honored with the LMU Teaching Innovation Award. We are proud to once again present a program that combines academic excellence with practical engagement.
